Teenage Depression

Many of us have heard about 'Teenage Depression' or 'Anxiety Issues at a Really Young Age' but very few people have agreed with the fact that it exists. Does it have anything to do with the people around us? Does it have anything to do with the generation? Do all of the teenagers go through this? Isn't overthinking a part of depression?

The answer to all of these questions is YES.

All of us pass from a stage at least once in our lives where we don't feel enlightened enough to get up and do our daily errands. But people nowadays face this hardship in an early stage of their lives called 'Teen-age'. Teenage is a phase where a human gets molded or nourished in both good and bad ways. It is the transition age from being a kid to an adult. There is a lot more to learn and adapt when we enter into teen-age phase. This phase starts when we are 13 years old and ends at 19 years.

School- bullying:
Depression and school days

Almost all of us were in school when we were teenagers. Some won’t believe but school is one of the major reasons for Teenage Depression. Many of us might have been bullied during our school days or may have bullied someone as a part of the fun. Some of us were strong enough to digest the fact that bullying never makes any difference to our abilities while some were not! Not every kid confesses to someone trustworthy about being bullied. Some of them even try to harm themselves. They feel something is wrong with them; they feel unloved or underestimated and suffers from depression 'Depression is a mental health disorder where the person suffering feels a loss of interest in activities which causes emotional disability in their life until it is cured.

How does failure lead to depressive thoughts?
Failure

Many times, when a teenager cannot succeed in doing something (as we commonly call it 'a failure’), that person gets immensely de-motivated that they give up on everything in their life. Let it be their studies or some competition or their popularity or a love relationship. Whenever a student fails in his/her examination, they literally lose hope that they can pass in the next chance if they work harder for what they desire to achieve. People call them losers which they really are because they just lost precious time in grieving rather than getting up and working hard.

Teens of this generation are not at all ready to accept that if you go for something it has both pros and cons just like two sides of a coin. For them, popularity and their dignity is the only priority. They are not ready to face the darker side of the world. Basically, a GenZ kid is someone who got access to technology in their early childhood and today’s teens are GenZ kids. These teens are most likely to suffer from depression. For them, everything is fair and square, everything is black and white. They need to understand how it feels to suffer from failure. Maybe no one was there to make them sit and explain the gray of their life?! The last statement is very debatable.

Parents should know when their child is in depression! :

Mom and daughter

People who are from the age of our grandparents and parents had to struggle for whatever they wanted to achieve. At some point in their lives, they even had conditions in which if you put a teen of this generation then he/she would never be able to survive. They have had a reality check in their lives while teens from these days have not. We have got all the luxuries and leisure that we are not ready to work hard whenever we fail. Parents, in a way, are the reason behind the depression of their children in many ways.

Parents have not given enough attention to their children to understand the feelings or emotions or problems their child is facing in his/her life. Parents’ being strict is one of the reasons why kids are not open about certain things at home. Parents should always help their children to nurture in a good way; they should talk about what is happening with their child, they should support their child if he/she is being bullied or facing a hard time. It always results in a bad influence when parents are not against bullying. Sometimes, the child does not feel that they share a good space with their parents in that case they should always consult someone trustworthy.

Overthinking often leads to depression:

There is a saying, “Empty brain is always a home for the devil”. Meaning: whenever our brain has zero thoughts left to think about then we start overthinking and that is devilish for our mental health. Many mental health issues start with overthinking. In most cases, thinking leads to suicidal thoughts. Let me explain how it works. Our mind is never thoughtless. Every now and then we are thinking about one thing or the other. Sometimes we purposely think about something and sometimes it just comes up out of nowhere.

Whenever we are out of purposeful thinking, our mind starts thinking on its own. Mostly, those thoughts are negative regarding our life, career, and profession. And as we all know, too much negativity that comes from within is not good for our mental and emotional health, and with time; it is going to result in depression. Teenagers, of this generation, cannot handle even a bit of stress on their minds. They are so feeble for that matter that they are not able to face a bit of declination. In fact, they are not ready for a bit of it. And then comes the overthinking, overthinking about our failure always leads to sadness and helplessness which is the symptom of depression.

How can we help to come out of it?

Depression is something that cannot be cured only with medicines; it should be fought from within. The medication would not work unless the person suffering from it tries to overcome everything. And for teenagers, overcoming every bad situation is a must. It is bad for teenagers to feel depressed at this early age because many more hardships are waiting for them but if they need our help, we should help them in every possible way. Failing should be normalized. One has to overcome the fear of being failed otherwise he/she would not be able to survive in this world. Listening is the key.

If anyone approaches you who is depressed (regardless of being a teen or an adult) then you should listen to everything they want to say, you should help and try to fill the voids inside them, you should be around them as much as possible and if their thoughts are suicidal then you should immediately consult someone professional because whatever the reason is but no one deserves to die. School bullying should be stopped. Teachers and parents shall take note of the same. Parents should always be understanding enough to their children so that they don’t fall under a bad influence. No one really knows what is going on in someone’s mind but if we know then we should always approach to help them. No one wants a sad person around them but if someone is suffering then always try to help them. The world will be a better place with happy people in it.

A very important topic. People do not realise the importance of mental health. People should talk more about it. It would've been better if flexing mental health was a thing instead of physical health.
